The development of the Dorper, its nutrition and a perspective of the grazing ruminant on veld.

چکیده
The development of the non-woolled Dorper sheep breed is briefly reviewed. Despite the large number of Dorpers in South Africa, precious little research results have been published on its nutrition under harsh, arid grazing conditions, especially since this has been an objective for creating and developing the breed. Results from the limited number of trials with free ranging Dorpers on natural pasture (veld) regarding diet selection, voluntary feed intake and rumen variables are used in conjunction with production data to create a nutritional perspective of the free ranging ruminant.

Grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep.
The grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep, as well as other related aspects (pasture intake, walking habits and trampling) is reviewed. It was clear that Dorper sheep are less-selective grazers, compared to Merino-type breeds. Dorpers utilised shrubs and bushes to a greater extent, but grass to a lesser extent in relation to Merino sheep. The Dorper also utilised a larger number ...
متن کاملRuminant Livestock and Greenhouse‐Gases (A Nutritionist Perspective)
Greenhouse gases have been of serious global concern to environmentalists. Enteric ruminal fermentation and manure are seen to be responsible for global warming. Based on a better understanding of positive tan-nin effects on ruminant nutrition, the feeding value of browse trees and shrubs containing tannin, their roles on methanogenic rumen microbes in overcoming the production of enteric ferme...

Since the use of antibiotics in animal feeds has been banned, researches on alternative natural products that modulate ruminal fermentation have been intensified. Natural compounds such as plant extracts have been considered to be replaced antibiotics as safe and sustainable alternatives. Plant extracts especially essential oils and saponins have strong antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antiprotozo...
